More about this artwork:

As shown by this maidenhair spleenwort, Asplenium trichomanes, ferns exhibit a characteristic growth pattern with all fronds connecting to a central base. Ferns evolved 360 million years ago, and were the first plants to have true leaves and stems. Maidenhair spleenworts are considered miniature ferns, and can often be found growing on old rock walls. Their thin dark stems are thought to resemble hair, inspiring this plant’s common name. “Asplenium” derived from the greek splḗn, meaning spleen, because the shape of the spore-releasing structures on the underside of it’s leaves looked like the namesake organ. It always cracks me up how many plants are named after random blob-shaped organs!
