Learn about Liverworts:

Although it looks like something from an alien landscape, the umbrella liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha, is a tiny plant (1-2 cm tall) that can be found world wide. They belong to the earliest groups of land plants to evolve (475 million years ago) the bryophytes, all of which are small and restricted to wet areas because they have to absorb water directly through their tissues. They have no true stems, leaves, or roots. Looking closely, you can see individual cells that each have an open pore for gas exchange. Liverworts are named because their lobed plant body, the thallus, resembles that organ. The umbrella-like structures in this painting are not flowers, but reproductive structures called archegoniophores, shown at three different stages of development.
